The basis for designing the Ponorogo cultural park area resembles a grid system with the main axis perpendicular to the Reog monument. Creating a fabric of outer and inner space that is mutually reinforcing and permeable. This is coupled with the 360 degree orientation of the building which strengthens and emphasizes the monument as an access area. Creation of diverse scales and functions of indoor and outdoor spaces to accommodate various kinds of cultural activities. Apart from being flexible, this also increases the region’s resilience to opportunities for changes in function and activity due to ongoing cultural developments.

Permeability and ease of access for everyone are highly prioritized. All stairs are equipped with difable ramps and the area in front of the monument is equipped with an incline elevator which can also be an attraction. Access between service and visitors is separated for comfort and safety. The building concept adopts the principles of vernacular architecture, especially Javanese, which are translated into a building layout that is not massive, spread out but evenly distributed, has a roof with wide overhangs, semi-rooms with openings for cross ventilation and optimal natural lighting.

To maintain the sustainability of biodiversity in the area, the Ponorogo cultural park area is equipped with a Bioswale which functions as a rainwater catchment area. This will also “restore” the area’s function as a protected area and water conservation area (minimum water run-off). To realize this area, of course it takes a long time and costs a lot of money. So phasing development is a necessity. There are 4 development stages proposed based on priority scale considerations to optimize existing resources.
