One of the most common problems experienced in multi-storey dwellings is the lack of social space for residents. Whereas the existence of social space is very important to support communication and productivity of residents with diverse characters. Where they are not only looking for a place to live and work, but also opportunities to collaborate. Therefore, our Co-Living apartment wants to answer this challenge. We design a four-storey apartment with the Co-Living concept, with ground floor fully used as a public space. There is a swimming pool, living, kitchen, min bar, and co working space with a rice field view.
We designed this building with an optimal opening facing the back to respond to the view of the rice fields. Meanwhile, we make the front of the building more closed in order to provide privacy for residents. Although the building is taller than its surrounding , we don’t want to present a building that looks massive. For this reason, we design the facade using modules which are equipped with bamboo plants and vines. What makes the building facade is not completely covered but more permeable.
In addition, at the bottom of the building, dynamically shaped woven wood is used to prevent the building from having a rigid formal impression. Inside the building we also provide a green area overgrown with fern trees as an open area and rainwater catchment. This building does have a “unique” shape, but somehow this building naturally fits itself into its context.
Although the site area is not more than 300 m2, this building is able to optimize it with 10 rental rooms, one penthouse, and a spacious living room with a double height ceiling. The indoor and outdoor spaces are designed as “borderless” so as to make the room feel more spacious and the interaction between occupants and the natural environment for the better.
It also optimizes natural lighting and ventilation which minimizes energy use. To support optimal productivity, there are also variations in the composition between “private” and “public” work spaces. In the middle of the building there is a staircase that functions like an amphitheater that can be used for work while enjoying the view of the rice fields. The rooftop is used as a gathering space for those who want to party while enjoying views of the rice fields with a beautiful and unforgettable sunset as a background.
