Blue Hill Living

Blue Hill Living is a 17-unit residential development located at the southern edge of Bali, conceived as a small-scale mixed-use project that brings together private accommodation and public activity within one integrated environment. Rather than functioning as a conventional stay that operates independently from its surroundings, the project explores how living spaces and shared facilities can support one another, creating a place that feels more connected, active, and relevant to its context.

Opening Hospitality to the Surrounding Community

In many accommodation areas, buildings tend to be private and inward-looking, with limited social interaction. Responding to this condition, TANAREKA introduced an open restaurant at the most accessible level of the site as a gesture of giving back to the community. Positioned close to the main access, the restaurant becomes a social interface that connects staying guests, local residents, and the surrounding neighborhood, allowing the project to participate more actively in the life of the area.

The accommodation and F&B functions were intentionally designed to complement one another, ensuring the building remains active throughout the day through different patterns of use by both in-house guests and outside visitors. This mixed-use strategy creates broader economic potential by diversifying sources of income—from room occupancy to commercial activity.

Integrating Private and Public Life on a Contoured Site

The site’s descending contour became a key consideration in the planning process, particularly in defining building orientation. Instead of flattening the land, the existing topography was treated as an opportunity to organize the project into a layered spatial sequence: the upper level accommodates guest arrival and the restaurant, the middle levels are dedicated to the swimming pool and outdoor seating, while the lower levels provide more private accommodation zones. This arrangement allows every level to receive optimal views while ensuring the entire site is used efficiently and meaningfully.

Through this approach, Blue Hill Living offers an alternative model for hospitality in Bali—one where accommodation becomes part of a more open and integrated everyday setting, with the restaurant acting as a bridge between the staying experience and the surrounding community.
